With the large number of Croatian immigrants making Adelaide their new home, the late Archbishop of Adelaide Msgr. Dr Matthew Beovich, himself of Croatian heritage, delegated a priest for the Croats, who began to gather the Community at St. Patrick’s Church in the city, where it celebrates its Sunday Masses until today. The Croatian Chaplaincy serves not just the city of Adelaide and its suburbs but the entire federal unit of South Australia.
Several Croatian priests visited Adelaide, with Fra Rok Romac OFM remaining for a year in 1953, founding the Croatian Catholic Centre. After him, the Community was spiritually guided by Rev. Fr. Ivan Mihalić. The arrival of Rev. Fr. Nikica Dušević motivated the community to start a Sunday school. During his tenure, the Croatian Community bought a bungalow-style house in Ridleyton. The Reverend Father extended the garage space to include a small chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Grand Croatian Baptismal Covenant. Fr. Dušević retired in 1996., and returned to his hometown of Ljubač in Croatia. Their successors were Rev. Fr. Ilija Jokić (Đakovo-Srijem Diocese, Croatia), Rev. Fr. Luka Pranjić (Vrhbosna Archdiocese, Bosnia), Rev. Fr. Josip Grubišić (Vrhbosna Archdiocese, Bosnia) and Fra Nikica Zlatunić OFM (Franciscan Province of Bosna Srebrena, Bosnia). The current priest and the chaplain of the Croatian Community is Rev. Fr. Luka Poljak (Subotica Diocese, Serbia). Over the years, the Community was often visited and spiritually administered by numerous other priests from Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Hungary and Australia, especially during the interim periods between new priestly appointments.

Sestre Klanjateljice Krvi Kristove ASC
Sisters Adorers of the Blood of Christ ASC
In 1973, the Adelaide community was blessed with the arrival of the "Sisters Adorers of the Blood of Christ" to assist the Croatian Chaplain Fr. Nikica Dusevic in the Pastoral care of the Croatian Catholic Community in Adelaide. The late Archbishop James Gleeson accommodated Sisters at St. Joseph’s Convent in North Adelaide, where they still live today. The Sisters started their apostolate inspired by the charism and the spirit of their Congregation founded by Saint Maria De Mattias in 1834.
Their ministry includes:
-
Sacramental program,
-
conducting the church choir St. Cecilija,
-
coordinating liturgical readers,
-
Precious Blood prayer group,
-
pastoral visits to the sick and needy,
-
coordinating social activities and volunteers and managing the Croatian Care for the Aged Association have become essential resources to our community's older adults.
The Sisters also provide pastoral care to the aged people with a focus on their spiritual needs, including support with religious practices, including prayer and rituals, support in times of loss and grief, discussion in making essential decisions, contacting priests on their behalf, individual support when a person feels lonely and isolated, spiritual and emotional support when in crisis, and other.
To this day, the Sisters of the same Congregation have been serving the Croatian community and others, and they continue to evangelise through various ministries.
